The drastic deterioration in the humanitarian situation in Ukraine has led thousands to seek safety along the country's western borders. Thousands of vulnerable Ukrainians are now taking refuge in neighboring Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. IsraAID will distribute essential relief items like personal hygiene kits and blankets - critical amid COVID-19 and harsh winter weather - and provide psychosocial support to help affected populations deal with potential long-term trauma.

Impact

Meeting refugees' basic physical needs restores dignity and autonomy, alleviating some of the stress of displacement. Meanwhile, mental health support will help these vulnerable individuals to develop the resilience to cope with their circumstances and further reduces the risk of long-term trauma. IsraAID will also work with local service providers to strengthen protection and psychosocial support mechanisms in formal and informal refugee camps and centers, including child protection.

Challenge

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, at least 150,000 people have fled, seeking refuge in neighboring Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. Many have arrived on foot, bringing only what they can carry. With the situation rapidly worsening, up to 4 million people could flee in the coming days. Expert humanitarian assistance is urgently required to meet these vulnerable refugees' physical and emotional needs.
