Super Typhoon Rai Relief and Recovery Project
Story
Super Typhoon Rai (local name: Odette) devastated large areas in Mindanao and we are mounting relief and recovery initiative in order to assist those who are badly affected. We will focus our assistance in remote villages in Surigao where help maybe long in coming. Initially, we will provide food packs, mosquito nets, blankets and kitchen utensils and graduating to implement small-scale livelihood activities such as vegetable gardening and the construction of water and sanitation facilities.
Impact
Disaster is becoming common as changes in climate is real. The need to provide support to local communities so that they became resilient is crucial. There is a need for local communities to rise-up after every disaster and in so doing resiliency is improved. By the training and deployment of local volunteers we are able to pass-on our expertise to the communities we serve.
Challenge
Super Typhoon Rai (local name: Odette) slammed into communities in Mindanao wrecking much havoc and destruction. The poor especially farmers and artisans are badly affected and recovery will be slow. The effect of the super typhoon is so widespread that local governments are unable to cope, thus our role as service providers. We are local and can easily mobilize volunteers and logistics in an economical manner. We will be concentrating our efforts in remote villages in Surigao.
