Replanting Brazil's Fruit Trees
Story
The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation will plant thousands of fruit trees and provide horticultural training in the severely deforested municipality of Mococa, Brazil to create a sustainable source of healthy food for families while reforesting the region. Trees will be planted at schools and community centers as well as distributed directly to families. Harvests will help provide quality, fresh nutrition to local families and the trees will fight climate change and provide habitat for wildlife.
Impact
We must plant trees NOW to save the environment for future generations. The tree canopy in Brazil is one of the most important natural resources on our planet, and deforestation for paper and petroleum products, urban sprawl, and cattle pasture is destroying it at an unprecedented rate. By planting trees now, we can slow down the impacts until we restore balance to this fragile ecosystem. We will also save native fruit tree varieties of this area that could otherwise be lost forever.
Challenge
Ongoing deforestation in Brazil is causing climate-related disasters across the State of Sao Paolo, the country of Brazil, and the world as a whole. Mococa sits on the edge of the Brazilian rainforest and is in dire need of reforestation efforts to curb climate change and restore natural balance to the ecosystem. Also, the traditionally abundant fruits native only to this part of the world are threatened and becoming inaccessible to local people due to disappearing trees and high market prices.
