Story

The Amur tiger is one of the rarest species of animals in the world pushed to the brink of extinction by habitat destruction, poaching and ever scarcer game. The project will ensure efficient protection of the Amur tigers in core breeding areas. Rangers will conduct regular patrols in key tiger source sites - national parks and nature reserves of Primorsky and Khabarovsky provinces - using law enforcement monitoring program SMART. Impact

This project will result in more efficient law enforcement which would be one of the steps towards the effective implementation of Global Tiger Recovery Program and Strategy for conservation of the Amur tiger in the Russian Federation. Tigers are a keystone species. Supporting and training of the front-line staff will allow tigers to recover and other biodiversity under the tiger's umbrella to flourish as well. Saving the tiger means saving its entire forest kingdom with all the other animals.

Challenge

Amur tigers are included as endangered species in IUCN Red List and Russia's Red Book. There were large tiger populations in the mid-19th century, but by the late 1930s no more than 50 animals were left in the USSR. When hunting of tigers was banned in Russia, the population slowly recovered to over 580 individuals by 2019. Despite sustained conservation efforts over recent years, these big cats still remain at risk due to poaching, logging, forest fires, and prey depletion.
