Let's build a pollinator garden at Miguel Aleman
Story
Deforestation, soil desertification, and the excessive use of agrochemicals are some of the main negative impacts on pollinators, affecting their decline and mortality of these species that contribute to the natural cycle of pollination. The pollinator garden at Miguel Aleman Restoration Site, will provide a balanced habitat, and resources for pollinators. This will also significantly benefit food production in the Mexicali Valley.
Impact
The Pollinator Garden will offer refuge and food for pollinators that depend on flower nectar and pollen. These will benefit the propagation of native flora, helping to strengthen their cycles and protecting their ecological function. In addition, the project will attract at least 1,500 people a year to visit and participate in field practices and environmental education workshops; volunteers and visitors will recognize ecosystem services and will protect nature by reconnecting with it.
Challenge
Flora, fauna, and ecosystems depend on pollinators. The 420 acres of Miguel Aleman Restoration Site have been transformed from arid lands to groves of native species. So, taking care of pollinators in the area expands the impact of the restoration initiative and helps to recover the ecosystem, strengthening the natural cycles since these are spaces that provide food, shelter, water, and a habitat for pollinators, which plays a very important role in plant reproduction.
