Humane Treatment of Farm Animals
Story
More than 800 million animals are slaughtered for food in Canada yearly. Canadians assumes government ensures the humane treatment of farm animals and are shocked to discover there are no regulations stipulating the treatment of animals on the farm, other than animal cruelty laws, used only to prosecute egregious abuse. To counter this, we negotiate directly with farmers to improve standards of care while advocating for tough laws through meetings, petitions and letter-writing campaigns
Impact
Canada needs strong laws, proper enforcement and third party on-farm assessment in order to improve the lives of the more than 800 million farm animals slaughtered each year. As this is an issue that touches most of the population, our continued push for stronger farm animal welfare will also benefit all Canadians.
Challenge
Most Canadians are not aware of how their food arrives at their tables. Eggs, milk, beef, lamb, pork products: these all come from animals that, in many cases, are not treated humanely. What happens to the laying hen after her egg production decreases? How are the beef cattle handled over the course of their relatively short lives? Who benefits from our efforts? Everyone, most especially the animals - they shouldn't have to suffer to feed our families.
