HELP FIGHT AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN S/EAST
Story
Girls and women across Nigeria have fallen victim against sexual assault, rape and human trafficking. In Southeast, an estimated one in three women experienced physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime. Samonyemaechi is committed to addressing gender-based violence through investment, research and learning, and collaboration with stakeholders . SOHF will launch an intensive program of education in 20 rural communities and schools to understand and prevent sexual violence.
Impact
Early intervention is the best effective form of prevention since gender-based violence is likely to occur when adolescent reaches adulthood. There is need for significant learning and knowledge sharing through partnership. In addition, by increasing awareness and changing behaviour, our intervention will help to reduce the gender inequality that exists at all levels of society in Nigeria. We will use a baseline survey and a final questionnaire to evaluate the effectiveness of our intervention.
Challenge
One in every three Nigerian women experienced sexual violence as a child. Yet conversations on sexuality remain taboo in Nigeria, especially among young people-ages10 and 21. Women are regarded as subordinate to men. This culture of sexual ignorance, coupled with enforced stereotypes, demeans women and contributes greatly to gender-based violence. to end this we seriously need to end child marriage. We also have to seriously address sexual harassment of girls and proper education on sexuality.
