While Peace Winds has been able to help more than 1,600 households rebuild their homes and 120 disabled Haitians become more independent in the last year, these survivors of the August 2021 7.2 magnitude earthquake still have a long road to recovery. Disabled Haitians are especially vulnerable and unable to support themselves or their families. The need for food distribution among these families is at an extreme level. Peace Winds has a goal to provide food kits to 70 of these desperate families

Impact

Unfortunately, Haiti's disaster on August 14, 2021 will not be the last of its kind. Haitians continue to be at risk for earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Even in times when mother nature is calm, Haitians with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to hunger and poverty. With adequate funding, Peace Winds teams in Haiti are well-equipped to distribute food packages in the short term and to support livelihood and agricultural programs in the long term.

Challenge

There are more than 1,600 people with disabilities in Haiti's southern prefecture, but it is estimated that more than 3,200 people have new physical disabilities following the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake on August 14, 2021. Earlier this year, Peace Winds supported members of a local disability community center by distributing 120 mobility aids, including walkers, canes, wheelchairs, and crutches. Today, however, these vulnerable families have an urgent need of basic food packages.
