Enable children with disabilities in Indian slums.
Story
Children with disabilities living in slums are the most disadvantaged group in Indian society. They are 5 times more likely to be out of school & often subject to severe social exclusion. Negative attitudes deter disabled kids from taking part in the family, community or workforce. OSCAR's specialised sports activities, events & equipment encourage & enable kids to be part of a team, to discover their own unique ability, in the classroom & on the field. Raising confidence & aspiration is key.
Impact
The long term impact is social inclusion, equality, dignity, regular school attendance & a greater, happier more fulfilled life....full of SMILES! The Disability Project removes negative stigmas & challenges cultural beliefs about disability. The success, progress & ability of disabled children becomes a source of pride for parents & the community. OSCAR's active, educational & fun sessions in special & mainstream schools in Mumbai, breaks traditional stereotypes & attitudes towards disability.
Challenge
Poor families living in low income communities are ill equipped to provide adequate care for physically & mentally impaired children. Lack of time, money & education, coupled with the social stigma of having a disabled child leads to the child being socially excluded, resulting in low morale, aspiration & an inability to take part in group activities. Uneducated parents need support & guidance to provide the special needs their child requires. Will you help give a disabled child a better life?
