Create 50 guardians for Bahia Magdalena mangrove
Story
Mexico ranks 4th place of 125 nations with mangroves, representing 5.1% of the world total. We need to create 50 guardians to protect 1,700 ha of mangrove forests from which families depend on. This ecosystem provides shelter to grey whales, turtles and more than 122 migratory bird species, including the southernst bald eagle population of the hemisphere. This project will motivate the community to value the natural environment, reaffirm their identity, and conserve this precious ecosystem.
Impact
When the local community is the main steward of its natural resources, a harmonious development with their environment is guaranteed. The guardians of the mangrove of Bahia Magdalena will inspire their community to take pride of and care for the ecosystem that provides them economic welfare and invaluable environmental services. Help us make this possible!
Challenge
Around 20,000 ha of mangrove are lost every year in Mexico. These ecosystems contribute annually with $37,500 dollars per hectare to the fishing sector and serve as natural barriers against natural phenomena like hurricanes and flooding, protecting the livelihood of coastal communities. To protect the mangrove forests, its essential that communities recognize their value and become their guardians.
