Story

This project will create, in a rural community in Colombia, 5 plots of edible forest, an ecosystem of useful plants, carefully designed and maintained that will provide food in abundance to more than 125 people in the long term, while maintaining the benefits of a natural system.

Impact

The edible forests will feed the families of 12 rural women in the long term with a variety of fruits and vegetables grown and harvested under permaculture principles, creating social fabric, improving food security and empowering women. Once the food security needs are met, the rest of the produce could be comercialized, ensuring additional income for women through the creation of value chain. These women are now gathered in an association called ASOMCA.

Challenge

In a rural Colombian community, 53% of the female population does not have a formal job and is dedicated to housework, without any recognition or remuneration. In addition to this, they are in the area of influence of a natural national park, which limits the possibilities of developing economic activities to generate income. This project will affect 12 rural women, helping to alleviate the economic dependence of their partners and improving their autonomy and decision-making capacity.
