The Education for the Children Foundation (EFTC)
Guatemala
Mission
We work with disadvantaged children and their families to break the cycle of poverty through education and empowerment. The Education for the Children Foundation (EFTC) is an international NGO based in Guatemala. We run the School of Hope, a Primary and Secondary School. Established in 2003, our NGO has grown steadily from helping a handful of children to today, where we educate 462 impoverished children, support another 215 further education scholarship students and work to empower the local community. Guatemala has one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. The country suffers from serious poverty and social issues. Although officially education is free to all, the costs of books, school supplies, transportation, uniform and food mean that many families cannot afford to send their children to school. Without the work of EFTC and our supporters, our students' parents wouldn't be able to send them to school. The children would end up working or begging on the streets, staying at home to help with household chores or resorting to petty crime. Worse still, they could fall prey to the local gangs. Where previously these children faced desperate futures, they now have positive choices. Our students have the best possible start in life and a real chance to compete with graduates from more privileged backgrounds.
